Chapter Nineteen

Lily had woken early and watched Richard sleep. She stroked his face before kissing his lips. He didn’t stir as she pulled off the covers gently and looked at his naked torso. Then she stopped to see the plaster and gently touched the surrounding area. That night he had held her in her arms very gently and for the first time since she had her accident. She felt safe.

‘Hello,’ he said staring at her as she smiled. ‘I see you’re still dressed like a Ninja.’

Lily glanced down at her black yoga pants and matching long sleeved top.

‘I wanted to make sure you didn’t get a shock if you saw me naked.’ She nuzzled into his neck sniffing his familiar smell. ‘Did I wake you?’

‘I was half asleep. Thinking about the past few weeks,’ he sighed and pushed her hair back. ‘You look better.’

‘I’ve been sleeping non-stop,’ she sighed before yawning.

‘You’re still having nightmares.’

‘I know,’ she frowned and bit her lip hard.

‘You physically shake and I know you’re trying not to scream. I should’ve been with you, in this bed, since you got back.’

‘They’re not stopping, the dreams.’

‘Do you want me to ask the doctor to recommend a counsellor?’

‘No!’ she said firmly and glared at Richard. ‘I don’t think it’s going to help. They’ll probably bang us up in the same place Tia’s in.’

‘Funny girl!’

‘Knowing my luck!’ Lily flinched as she tried to stretch out. ‘The pain!’

‘They’ll go,’ Richard said and stroked her side. ‘Can I look at your bruises?’

‘No,’ she said and pulled the duvet up.

‘Yolanda said they were going.’

‘When they’ve gone I’ll take my clothes off again,’ Lily whispered as Richard narrowed his eyes and shook his head.

‘This is all because I threw up?’

‘In all my years I’ve never had that reaction from anyone, not even when Dominic accidentally saw me naked in the shower and fled the building feigning mental cruelty,’ Lily laughed.

‘I was shocked,’ he said propping himself up on his elbow. ‘I knew it was bad but to see your body like that, it hit me hard how seriously you’d been hurt.’

‘So you chundered in the toilet?’

‘I’m stronger now.’

‘I don’t think you are,’ she said before sighing. ‘Anyway I can’t even look at myself so you shouldn’t have to be inflicted.’

‘I’ll show you my wound,’ he smirked leaning closer.

‘I don’t want to see where she hurt you,’ flinched Lily. ‘It’ll make me mad and you’re still just about healing from her last assault. Why don’t you press charges against her Rich? What she did was wrong?’

‘I’ve told you, I can’t,’ he said and lay back down on the pillow.

‘Then what am I supposed to do?’

Lily was shocked to see DI Davies and Sergeant Matthews on her doorstep just after eight on Monday morning. Richard was on his way out to work as Derek finished a cup of tea.

‘Hello,’ Lily said holding Beau by his dungaree straps to stop him from scampering out.

‘I know this is early but can we speak to you?’ DI Davies said and this time she wasn’t her usual smiling self.
